Two weeks ago, we talked about the ways in which our primary caregiver relationships shape the way we see and relate to God. Inheriting a fallen state, our attempts at attachment to others and God are insecure at best, leaving us anxious, shut down, or shame-filled.
Then, last week, we talked about the pattern of belonging and how we’re all searching for security, stability, and health. In every significant relationship, we hunt these three things. We want to be seen, known, and loved—and before we can name it, we feel the lack of relationship with God that we were made to enjoy. Trying to fix the pattern with our own wisdom, we offer our desires to sinful, misshapen patterns outside of God’s good design.
The things we’re looking for are good, true, and beautiful - but the desire under all of it is for our Maker, not other people or ourselves.
Until grace comes, we can’t help but demand shadows provide substance.
This is why Christ not only saves us from wrath but repairs our ruptured relationship with God. By the Holy Spirit, God empowers us to find what we’re looking for in the only realm it can be found, in the place of our belonging: the family of God.
This week, we’re looking at how God repairs our broken patterns through healthy relationships within the family of God.
