I asked a friend how he was doing yesterday afternoon, and he said, I’m at this point where I feel my age differently, like I introduced a friend and said, “We’ve known each other for fifteen years.”
When you can start counting things in decades, that’s a strange feeling, right?
Last night, I had the honor of officiating a wedding for two friends. When able, I meet with the bride and her bridesmaids, then the groom and his groomsmen before the wedding. I once watched a pastor do this and I’ve adopted it as my own - I offer a moment to each group of friends to mark the milestone of marriage with a word of encouragement and a time of prayer. We all love intentionality and get awkward at initiating it, so it’s fun to tee it up and see how people respond.
I stood with my friends yesterday and got to hear their friends speak of their character, the work of Jesus in their lives, and the way in which they have blessed their communities. There were tears, laughs, and true words spoken, which I think is everything you want at that moment.
After the ceremony, when dinner started, I found myself sitting at a table with two couples, dear friends of ours. I had my back to the corner, and could take in the whole room. Unwilling to share getting to hold my adopted nephew, Cal, I sat there while our table talked, the music played, and the room hummed with joy.
Then I had one of those moments.
